Lights Out
Lights Out Central Crisis and The Way It Relates To Our Task
The book Lights Out talks about the occurrence and aftermath of the U.S. being without power for an extended period, which is the central crisis. Throughout the book author Ted Koppel explains different crises of power outages, such as a power outage in New York that lasted for thirteen days and rendered tens of thousands of people homeless (108). Koppel descriptively describes a crisis, he illustrates that “Slightly more than half an hour after cutting communications, the saboteurs attacked the actual substation, knocking out seventeen transformers over the course of nineteen minutes” (18). The detailed use of numbers helps create an image in the reader's head, which helps explain the crises throughout the book.
Our task of further explaining electrical grids to communities relates to the book Lights Out. For the duration of the book Ted Koppel distinguishes how electrical girds work and how they relate to blackouts across the United States. He explains that our main resources like water, sanitation, etc. depend on vulnerable electrical grids (Koppel 15). Qualitative evidence such as interviews helps the author find data about electrical grids. He quotes General Lloyd Austin, as he explains "'We’ve not experienced a significant effective attack against our power grid or against our transportation networks...I don’t think people realize how vulnerable you are until they see something happen'" (Koppel 89). Both Lights Out and our task, want to further explain electrical grids and their risks to people everywhere.
